Kicking Back

Woke up cold and rainy. We went from 80's on Tue to 46 this AM. But, who cares? We needed a kick back day and that's what we did. We're both still in our jammies (yes girls, Mom is wearing her sweat shirt/pants combo that you know so well, but I'm no better.

Robin read and siesta'ed and I researched stops for the coming weeks. The long drives are done for a month or two. Now we will wander around Colonial Mexico for a month or so before slowly heading north. There are a lot of sources but none better than Keven and Ruth's blog. LINK. They do a truly professional and informative blog. I've learned that there are non-Rver's interested in what we are doing...I commend them to look at Kevin-Ruth's blog and really learn something.

Other random thoughts for future travelers:

  • Technological things have changed since my last trip in '09.
  • PEMEX takes credit cards (at least so far).
  • Exchange rates using USAA Mastercard at ATM's and purchases are at a very high rate...what you see in the news. It seems everyone takes cards, even in the countryside.
  • Wifi is everywhere. Like in the US, it varies in quality.
More about calls/data: we use Verizon. They have an international plan for Mexico where you can turn on their daily plan for $2/day and you get your US plan in Mexico. So far it has worked perfectly since Verizon uses Mexico's TELCEL network. We may not bother to get a Mexico sim card since we're paying for Verizon in the US anyway. More as we continue our travels.
  • We've talked to several folks both called and calling (we even get the damned political calls that are forwarded from the house) on the Verizon plan. Perfect.
Something new to us: Juan told us that Facebook's messenger app has the best video system and it just proved true. Skype failed but FB Messenger worked great.

Tomorrow, if the rains end, we'll tour the town and do tourist things. There is a Super Walmart nearby so we may shop...but we don't really need anything.

What a great, relaxing, day.  We needed that.

PS: several of you have asked how to be notified of new posts. On the blog, on the right, there is a place to enter your email to get notified.

  1. If you want to stay put for another day a side trip to Real de Catorce is really worth the effort. The road is not for the motorhome but I believe you are towing a car. It is a fairly steep cobblestone road and a one way / wait your turn tunnel to get to the town but it is like you stepped back 100 years!

    Read about our trip here:

  2. Thanks! We are towing. Let me check that out. Seems worth doing. As to schedule, we have none except to see you and Norma during Holy Week.
