Like Brad Pitt came up this road

The title is a Robin quote. It was said somewhere during the 27KM (16.7 Miles) mind numbing cobblestone road that leads 9,000 feet up to Real de Catorce. She said that because Brad Pitt starred in "The Mexican" that was filmed there. He must have helicoptered in.

Really Small Tunnel

Actually, the road was in great shape...its just that you can't go fast and cobblestones are very noisy. The road ends at a single lane tunnel that is over 2 KM (1.2 miles) long. Its quite a ride.

About a mile before the tunnel a chap was thumbing for a ride. Why not? He got in and was real nice even though not a word of English. He invoked local rules and enabled us to park right by the church, saving a long hike. He showed us how to exit the town and was very appreciative. Locals noticed him getting out of our car and were nice to us also. The town policeman went out of his way to help us exit.

Real de Catorce is breath taking. Yes, in beauty and amazement, but for sure in taking your breath because you are at 9,000 ft! We both were wheezing. It wasn't the greatest of days since it was cold and they had just had snow. So glad we did this even with the 2 hour long cobblestone ride.

Friend Croft wrote about it when he was there. He's more eloquent ...read his report HERE.

Will upload more pictures later. WiFi is slow.

The pictures don't do justice to the steepness of the roads and town

The Tunnel the other way

PS: we will probably be off the grid Sat-Noon until Sun late. The town we're going to is off the grid we think. We're going to Guadalcazar, a short drive away.

  1. Yes, that is some road, isn't it? It was hot the day we were there and our ancient (1989) Honda boiled over and demanded water 2/3 of the way up. A friendly local with a hose helped us out.

  4. The way some of those roads looks like you might want to keep Brouno on the high side haha

  5. We've taken our rv all the way up the road and parked before the tunnel entrance. I wouldn't try it with motorhome though. I can remember one night we stayed there, ice cold and rainy. We hunkered down with the heater and watched the movie Marley and Me. Unreal that you guys ran into snow there.
