We love Patzcurao

Yesterday I chose to only post the picture of us at lunch because it was a wonderful event.

Before lunch we walked through the HUGE market that goes on forever and ever. I got 2 great leather belts for $8/each and 2 pair of Genuine Ray Ban sunglasses (or was it Roy Ban?) for $6/each. They're probably knock offs but the optics and construction feel like the real deal. Seeing all the things in the markets is amazing. And, surprise, in the fish, meat, and poultry sections there is all this product out in the open (on ice) yet no flies or smells.

Where we had lunch

Hey! Isn't that the grouch from SLP we saw earlier? But at least he is wearing genuine Roy Bans.

The lady isn't smiling in the picture but she was before and after and gave us permission

Comment on sanitation. As a retired restaurant owner, I notice stuff. Their standards are very high. Staff in grocery stores wear masks and gloves. The ice cream servers at the street side stands wear masks and gloves and will not touch money. They push a basket over where you put your money and a person, that does not serve ice cream, makes the change and puts it back in the basket.

Something else that you don't see in the US is gents at every square and parking lot offering to wash cars while you are away. They do an awesome job. These nice guys offered to wash for $2.81 but then he notched it up a bit and offered waxing too for $11.24 total! They really did a great job and were great guys.

This deserves special mention. This building dates from 1545!!!
Been around since 1545!!!

Today we did a 20 minute drive to Santa Clara del Cobre WIKI who's claim to fame is copper. Beautiful objects everywhere and we loaded up on some trinkets. If we had a house to live in they had copper sinks that were amazing and inexpensive. Most shops don't want you to take pictures so we honored that but some pix tomorrow.
Construction on the highway going there

Note the use of copper everywhere

Two churches in the same plaza

Then we picked up a big load of laundry that was neatly folded and smelling nice ($2.81!!!!!) and Tibbi's scratching medicine that our great Vet Bird and Kelly got to us via Texas and Chris's help.

Oh, the baby burro? He/she is growing like a weed and running like a race horse everywhere. 2 days ago he/she was all wobbly.

Minoux doesn't care

Tomorrow there is a huge wedding reception on the grounds here. They put up 3 very large tents. We'll try to get some pictures from afar.

Oh, and we lowered the price on the Cedar Island house LINK. Think Robin wants to spend a lot of time here.

Now we do a continuation of our Band of Brothers marathon. I served under one of them in Vietnam, Brigadier General Salve Matheson LINK

  1. Nice pictures again. I liked your comment on sanitation. Coming from someone who is an American and has experience in the food business it means a lot.

We need to return to Patzcuaro. We were there for Dia de los Muertos and visited a cemetery at night while it was being decorated with thousands of flowers. Janitizio, have you gone there yet?

  2. We'll go to the island next week.

At the restaurant last night I was able to see in the kitchen now and then. Spotless and the staff were wearing hair nets and masks. I've been impressed with the cleanliness of even the food stands in markets. They look like they could pass a stateside inspection easily.

  3. Your pictures of this trip are completely shattering my thoughts and misconceptions of Mexico. It is a beautiful country and the towns look to be very clean. I know it is not all like that but enough to change my mine about the country.
