Wedding Anniversary Cruise (Patz)

Our 2nd wedding anniversary is Monday. Being the romantic big spender that I am, I surprised Robin with a cruise to a distant island and an awesome meal that only required walking up mega flights of stairs.

Our 45' yacht, complete with live music, awaits.

It has life jackets. 8 ea. Boat holds 80 pax. But there are a zillion boats traversing the route so help would be minutes away. Boats appeared to be in excellent condition. I think they are considered part of the public transportation system of the city and area.

Great music both ways.

Soon we arrive at the Island of Janitzio LINK. Read the link and it talks about the butterfly net fishermen. Well, wouldn't you know, there happens to be 4 boats of butterfly fishermen very near where the boats come in. Amazingly, when the boats get close, the fishermen drop their huge butterfly nets a few times whilst the boat idles. Then, amazingly, 2 of the boats drop their nets where they are and furiously paddle over to the boat and go up each side with a hat for a few pesos for the demo...which caught zero fish. They did catch something: tourists. Hey, they're working and its a good show for a few pesos. I suggest the Cedar Island fishermen do the same thing: meet each ferry and pull some crab pots or something and then pass the hat.

Now the work begins: walking up this huge hill on very narrow steps with a huge, uneven, rise and no rails. On each side are many vendors of stuff and restaurants. The amazing thing is that stuff for these shops has to be brought up these same stairs! We passed one chap with a 50# bag of something going up and several chaps hauling up cases of sodas and merchandise for the shops.

At the top is the huge statue of  José María Morelos, a hero of Mexico's independence. You can climb up to the raised hand. Steve sat in a chair at the base while Robin did the climb. Steve was worn out from the climb to get to the statue. Steve is wise.

Circular staircase to the arm...if you have big feet, you're in trouble
Robin says the wind was blowing so hard she could barely hold on
Great views

We then had a late lunch.

Then we caught the boat back to Patzcurao. Complete with music. 30 minute ride.

Isn't Steve a big spender? BTW: the yacht cost $3.14 each, round trip. It really was a great day and wonderful trip.

BTW, re tourists. We never heard a word of English the whole day. We were the only Gringos on the island it seems.

  1. We did that cruise a few years ago as well but came back for dinner on the dock where the boars leave from. Great memories, thanks!

    1. Yep, I'm sure we'll always remember this too. Maybe we can come back for our 50th Anniversary? I'll climb the arm next time.

      Enjoy Vegas!

    1. It is real eye opening Wes. I've been here twice and yet I am constantly amazed. These folks, generally, are hugely family focused and not materialistic or jealous. Too many opinions of Mexico come from folks that have only been in border towns or cruise ship tourist haunts. In our almost 2 months, so far, when we hear English, it is noteworthy. I'll opine on this more on a future blog. Thanks for commenting.
